Professional Development Service Learning
Communication, Leadership, Professionalism, Healthcare Environment, Business Skills
Five American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Competency Domains inform the Healthcare Management Program, and comprise the curriculum matrix. The Professional Development Service Learning (PDSL) E-Portfolio is a robust protocol for students to focus on competency-based activities. Students access their PDSL through Collegiate Link on River Life, and document how they interpret and apply experiences under each of the five competencies. At the end of each semester a profile of the collective cohort of Healthcare Management students is published.
Endowed Teaching Chair to focus on PDSLs 2017-2020
April 2017 - Dr. Anne L. Drabczyk was awarded the Basil L. King Endowed Teaching Chair in Health Science for her proposal - Healthcare Management Competency Co-Curricular: Professional Development Service Learning (PDSL). Competencies will initially be explored through an innovative and participative process; World Café. Select students will be trained as World Café hosts, and meaningful conversation sessions will be held with students to explore and build awareness regarding competencies. Students record experiential learning and outcomes online through a PDSL Form that yields an E-Portfolio of practical application and skill transference. Subsequent competency-specific trainings further polish ability in each competency. Finally, partnership with regional healthcare practitioners will be fostered through Round Tables held on each IRSC campus. These co-curricular activities promote an essential awareness of the competency-focused Healthcare Management program, and profile IRSC Healthcare Management students in a career-ready spotlight.
